To distinguish fibre optic cables from one another, coatings are marked with different colours. IEC 60304 standard contains a colour key for cables up to 24 optical fibres. See details in table 1. There are also other colour schemes for cable characterization.

If a cable does not contain colour-coded optical fibers, other optical marking system has to be used to fulfill all optical characterization requirements.
